Registered Holistic Nutritionist, Expert in Gut Health & Plant Based Nutrition...Oh and Founder of Birch & Body Holistic Nutrition.
I'm Carly,
a Registered Holistic Nutrition Coach and Registered Holistic Nutrition Practitioner, specializing in gut health and plant forward diets, with years of firsthand experience in finding balance in health and wellness.
I believe most of us struggle with our gut health because we're too afraid or embarrassed to speak up about our symptoms. It also doesn't help that far too many of us are told "you'll just have to live with it" or "I'm just not finding anything wrong from your tests" or "there's nothing I can do to help you" and these are answers no one should have to settle for.
Sure, some may believe my approach is a little progressive...off the beaten path, one might say, but that's because the path most of us are taking isn't helping. If it were, we wouldn't be facing the rise in chronic illnesses we are today. So perhaps it's best to try a more unusual approach. One thing's for sure, my approach is evidence based and provides my clients with the results and answers they desire. Leaving them to feel empowered and confident with their newfound health journey. If you're ready to travel off the beaten path with me, I promise, I won't lead you astray and you will FINALLY find the answers and outcome you have been looking for.
Let's talk about how we got here...
What brought me into the world of health and wellness, what brought you here and most importantly what I can do to help you.
It all started my first year of University. I was beyond stressed, had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up (do any of us really know at 17 when starting Uni?) and at the time, I thought I had all the pressure of the world on me, (little did I know what being an adult was) needing to be perfect and please everyone around me. I was overwhelmed, it was my first time away from familiarity and just like every other teenager, I had the whole world telling me what to do and what not to do.
At the time, I thought it was these shifts in my life, causing my digestive symptoms and like most I was embarrassed to discuss them with anyone. When I finally did feel comfortable talking to my doctor, she told me to just avoid the foods that bothered me and beyond that there was nothing else she could do to help...that meant eliminating entire food groups. Talk about disordered eating or what? Now if you have true allergies, of course this makes sense, but if not this truly isn't the way to go about solving your digestive issues. I remember thinking, my doctor is supposed to have all the answers and if she doesn't know, then I guess I'm at a loss. What else can I do? So I to gave up. It took years from that point and A LOT of expensive tests and guess work before I received a proper diagnosis (Celiac) and began finding real solutions to my symptoms.
Had I known at the time that my SADiet (Standard American Diet) consisting of prepackaged foods, refined grains, meat, dairy, processed sugary snacks and everything in between was hindering my health and exacerbating my symptoms, maybe I would have been able to stop living in chronic pain sooner. I never stopped to question whether the food I was consuming was helping or hindering my problems. Why would I? Everyone else around me was eating the same. The problem was, I was always in pain, fearful of eating out with friends or family, knowing I'd be uncomfortable, living in leggings for years because it's the only thing that fit when my stomach was distended after every meal. Daily, I dealt with symptoms such as, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, gas, abdominal pain, and more. I wasn't in control of my life anymore, my symptoms were. I remember one of my doctors actually telling me it was in my head and for a moment, I believed them, because if it were real, there must be a cure for it and they couldn't find anything to help me, so I must have been imagining it.
Fast forward to my diagnosis and still no practitioner could help me with what to eat and what not to eat. All I was told was to avoid gluten. Seriously? What's gluten and what's it found in and who can I talk to about properly transitioning my diet? I saw every practitioner there was, GI specialists, naturopaths, homeopaths and more and not one could explain to me how to properly transition my diet nor that I needed to do serious healing with my gut after the years of damage I had done to it. How could all of these practitioners, who were supposed to have all the answers for me, not mention anything about gut health and it's role in healing my body. The reason being, most doctors only receive an average of 11 hours of nutrition training throughout their entire medical program. That's honestly nothing when you consider nutrition is one of the biggest factors in our gut health and up to 90% of all diseases can be linked back to the health of our gut. So it wasn't their fault, but nor was it mine. Mine symptoms were absolutely real and so are yours. Just because this was my journey, it doesn't mean it has to be yours. You can take the path less travelled and find solutions early on in your journey to health and wellness. It's my mission to help those failed by conventional medicine, to take back control of their lives and up level their gut health. I have over 1000 hours of nutrition training and continue to learn more each day, so I can better serve you. I'm always looking for the newest research in order to provide my clients with the best knowledge to arm them with the tools for success and independence upon finishing a program with me. Are you ready to level up your gut health?

Let me be honest...
By no means am I perfect. Let me say that again....I'm. Not. Perfect, nor do I expect my clients to be. I still make room for pizza, tacos, cookies and chocolate because they are things that truly make me happy and allow me to be my authentic self. Working with me isn't about creating more stress in your life, it's about simplifying things and making life easier for you. We all need to break the rules from time to time, because we also need to live life and enjoy experiences for what they are. The point of working with me is to create a lifestyle that provides you with the necessary structure where you can truly feel your best while also being flexible, because being strict has never made anyone happy nor is it sustainable.
Your favourite snack, dinner out with family or friends, your favourite Starbucks drink from the drive thru or food on the run. None of these things should make you feel guilty or cause you pain. When you work with me, I teach you how to incorporate all your favourite treats in a productive way that ensures you have balance between happiness and success throughout the duration of your program. By doing so we're setting you up for independence and food freedom, so you can have confidence taking your health into your own hands, leaving your time with me feeling empowered with the knowledge you've gained in just a short amount of time. You'll no longer have to deal with the daily pain, mystery symptoms, unreliable diagnoses, inaccurate tests and lack of answers. With me, you'll never have to worry about elimination diets, long lists of supplements, fad diets (*cough* Keto, low carb, no fat...), or working harder not smarter. I'm all about people wanting deep-rooted lifelong results (not quick fixes because those aren't realistic), science based facts, balance, rest, nature and pushing my clients beyond their comfort zone, to find their desired results. If this sounds good to you, then I'm glad you've found me and I'm excited to start this journey with you!

Fun facts...
01
Why "Birch"?
One of my favourite places has always been our cottage, nestled amongst the birch trees. But did you know, the birch tree is one of the first species to regrow after tragedy? It can thrive through the harshest of conditions, remaining resilient, just like the human body. The birch tree also symbolizes rebirth, new beginnings and growth. Not to mention the medicinal properties of birch trees that have been used for centuries.

In My Past Life I Worked as a Vet Tech
Although I've switched career paths, I still have a clear passion for the health care industry and helping others. I've just switched from four legged clients to two legged clients.
05
Favourite Places
Our family cottage in Bancroft, Ontario where the majority of my time is spent while in Canada for 6 moths of the year and the cenotes of our home state in Yucatan, Mexico.

I'm Lucky to Call Two Places Home
I was born and raised in a tiny town called Goodwood (aka Schitt's Creek...IYKYK) in Ontario, Canada. I am still lucky enough to call Ontario home for 6 months of the year, but my husband and I (along with our two dogs) now spend the other half of the year soaking up our fair share of vitamin D in sunny Merida, Mexico. If you ever find your way there, be sure to stop in and say hello!

Couldn't Live Without...
The lake/ocean views of our two homes, MAPLE SYRUP (I wouldn't be Canadian otherwise), books, pottery...more specifically oversized tea mugs, matcha, pizza Fridays, tacos, peanut butter powder (I put that Sh*t on everything) and sloppy dog kisses.

Favourite Hobbies
Reading, anything outdoors but more recently paddle boarding, kayaking, long walks/hikes and pickle ball, arts and crafts and travel.
